Equally as important as why we select certain ingredients at specific concentrations is why we exclude others. The Alón products are built based on following the most cutting edge science, and our understanding to date is that the root cause of many skin conditions is a consequence of chronic inflammation. This is the case in pigment disorders, aging, skin redness, and even many modern concepts of cancer development.

With regards to pigment disorders, savvy cosmetic users will notice that the cast of depigment agents such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, and retinoids are not included. These agents generally inhibit the conversion of tyrosine to melanin (part of the pathway to hyperpigmentation) and have been shown to be effective in some cases. However, they are also known to cause skin irritation, especially at higher doses. Given that skin irritation leads to more inflammation, and inflammation is an underlying cause of the disorder, the same agents that depigment can also play a role in perpetuating the hyperpigmentation itself!

It is unacceptable in our view for a cosmetic or anti-aging product to have ingredients that could potentiate the same disorder for which the products were designed to alleviate.

Instead, the Alón products target melanin production with agents that prevent melanin synthesis, such as ascorbic acid, and niacinamide, thereby stopping the transfer of melanin to the keratinocytes (cells on the top most layer of the skin). In addition, we have incorporated a slew of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredients to address the underlying mechanism of action - skin irritation, genetic damage, and inflammation. This leads to a powerful alternative when used for several months.
