The Bakuchiol Effect

Retinoids (Retinol, RetinA) have been one of the most prescribed products by dermatologists for decades for reversal of sun damage, improvement of pigmentation, and more.  It’s hard to argue with some of their positive effects.  Yet, they come with a cost, and not a trivial one.  With retinoids, your skin can become quite sun sensitive, red, and peeling.  

Over the long term, retinoids can also cause small blood vessels to appear in the skin, making the appearance of redness worse. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could find something as powerful as a retinoid but without such side effects?  Wouldn’t it be nice if it was also natural? 

 Meet bakuchiol.

In a recent head to head study, 0.5% bakuchiol against 0.5% retinoid, 44 patients in both groups at 12 weeks showed similar anti-aging results.  But… the bakuchiol group had far fewer reports of skin irritation (such as sun sensitivity, redness, peeling) than the retinoid group.  That’s big!
